It’s almost time…
to begin your longest holiday.
At this point, you may have decided you will be ready to take your Plan benefits within the next year or so.
Retiring from the Plan means making some big decisions about how you want to take your benefits. It also means getting ready to begin the process of preparing your retirement application.

Not ready to take your Plan benefits?
While most members take their benefits at age 60, you can always choose to retire later. (Although, please bear in mind you may lose certain tax advantages should you delay taking your Plan benefits beyond the age of 75.)
By delaying retirement, you’ll likely receive a higher annual pension income, reflecting the shorter period it will expected to be paid to you. A larger guaranteed income can provide greater financial security in later life and help offset inflation or rising living costs.
However, there are also disadvantages to consider. Delaying retirement means postponing access to pension benefits, which may not be ideal for those with health concerns or a desire to enjoy leisure time earlier. There is also the risk that life expectancy may be shorter than anticipated, reducing the overall value received from your pension.
The percentage by which your pension can be increased is calculated using something called a ‘late retirement factor’. This is calculated by the Plan’s actuary and agreed with the Trustee. The factor is reviewed periodically and will change from time to time.

Understanding your options for taking your Plan benefits
Under the Plan, you have several of options for how you take your pension benefits. It’s important you understand what these are and what’s right for you before you make any decisions
Applying to retire
Retiring from the Plan can take time. It’s a good idea to start the process three months before the date when you want to start receiving your benefits.

Professional financial advice
Research shows people who take ‘at-retirement’ financial advice are almost always better off than those who don’t. A professional financial adviser will look at your personal circumstances. They’ll give you impartial advice about the choices you have for taking your pension benefits, and they’ll advise on the appropriate options for you.
Financial advice paid for by the Trustee
When it comes to taking your benefits from the Plan, the decisions you make can have a big impact on your income in retirement.
Because of this, the Trustee will cover the cost of an advice session with a firm of qualified advisers called ‘Origen Financial Services’. This is an extremely valuable benefit and one we strongly encourage you to take advantage of.
When should I take advice from Origen?
Timing is important as the Trustee will only cover the cost of one session with Origen Financial Services.
Ideally, you’ll take this advice at the point you think you’re ready to retire.
